Description
This course is aimed at dental nurses who wish to undertake clinical photography as part of treatment planning and assessment. The knowledge and theory of this activity is provided online and assessment is by way of a small portfolio of common photographic views. The course can be started at anytime and runs for a maximum of 4 weeks.
Course title: Clinical Photography
This course is aimed at dental and orthodontic nurses who wish to be practically involved in the clinical assessment of patients prior to dental or orthodontic treatment. Learners will be able to undertake dental or orthodontic photography.

Structure: The course is delivered by way of 2 short modules. All modules are mandatory and must be passed
Grading: Pass or fail
Pre-requisites: Candidates must hold GDC registration and a recognised Dental Nurse qualification and be working in a suitable environment
Course fee: £45 including VAT at 20%
Assessment: This qualification is assessed by the submission of a portfolio of cases.
Resit Arrangements: N/A
Practical Component: The taking of clinical photographs.
Guided Learning Hours: This programme is 20 Guided Learning Hours (GLH)
Course length: Learners have 4 weeks to complete the course

Clinical Photography
Workplace Portfolio of Evidence – this includes evidence of competency in the taking of intra and extra oral photographs as part of the initial assessment for dental treatment. For orthodontic treatment, this should include:
Extra oral
- Frontal view with lips at rest
- Frontal view with lips smiling
- Lateral view with the lips at rest in the natural head position
- ¾ profile at rest
Intra oral
Anterior view
- Right and left buccal views (in occlusion)
- Upper occlusal view
- Lower occlusal view
For dental treatment, the views should accurately represent the treatment need and be of good quality and be accompanied by a full report of the assessment process.
