Award in Suture Removal

This course is available to all dental nurses who would like to assist in dental treatments by the removal of sutures following assessment by a dental surgeon. The knowledge and theory are provided online, and the learner is asked to nominate an in-house supervisor for the practical stages. The course can be started at anytime and runs over a maximum of 16 weeks.

This course is aimed at dental nurses who wish to undertake the removal of sutures on referral from a dental surgeon.
Awarded by: The Dental Education, Learning and Training Academy
Structure: The course is delivered by way of a single module.
Grading: Pass or fail
Pre-requisites: Candidates must be working in an oral surgery environment.
Course fee: £85 – Including VAT at 20%.
Assessment: This qualification is assessed by:

  • 3 essay questions
  • A record of 8 patient cases
  • One extended case study
  • Multiple choice test

Candidates must achieve a pass in all assessments to gain the qualification.

Resit Arrangements: Candidates can receive a small course extension to amend or change any information as required.

Candidates get two attempts at the online multiple choice questions.

Multiple Choice Questions

At the end of the module, candidates will be required to pass a short multiple choice test on all subjects covered. This is 20 minutes in duration and consists of 15 questions. It can be taken at anytime following completion of the course, and is done online. Candidates get one resit opportunity should they not attain 75% on their first attempt. If the second attempt is also unsuccessful, this will result in a fail for the whole course.

Learner Outcomes:

The candidate will:

  • Understand their responsibilities as a GDC registrant with regard to the removal of sutures
  • Understand the importance of gaining informed consent
  • Understand the importance of a thorough clinical handwash
  • Recognise complications and how to manage them
  • Understand the stages of wound healing
  • Identify different types of suture materials
  • Identify different suture techniques

The candidate can:

  • Get appropriate informed consent for the treatment
  • Demonstrate good patient management
  • Perform a clinical handwash
  • Act appropriately in the event of any complications which may arise
  • Competently remove sutures from intra oral and extra oral wounds
  • Work within their limitations and scope of practice
