We provide the following Extended Duties courses. All courses can be started at any time. Assessment is done via a flexible, online test taken on completion of the programme.
The following courses require the involvement of a workplace supervisor / expert witness who will take overall responsibility for the practical evidence completed within the workplace. This person will receive their own account login and be required to sign off the evidence submitted. Please ensure you have this person in place prior to course application. Failure to do so will compromise course progress.
Fluoride Application
This course is aimed at dental nurses who already hold a qualification in Oral Health and would like to be able to apply fluoride (on referral) as part of the preventive advice given to patients. The knowledge and theory is provided online, and the learner is asked to nominate an in-house supervisor for the practical stages. The course can be started at anytime and runs over a maximum of 12 weeks.
Plaque Scoring
This course is aimed at dental nurses who already hold a qualification in Oral Health and would like to be able to undertake plaque scoring (on referral) as part of the preventive advice given to patients. The knowledge and theory is provided online, and the learner is asked to nominate an in-house supervisor for the practical stages. The course can be started at anytime and runs over a maximum of 10 weeks.
Cone Beam CT
This is a programme aimed at dental care professionals who are qualified in dental radiography and wish to extend their knowledge to allow them to take images using CBCT equipment. This course contains information surrounding the legislation, safety and uses of Cone Beam technology however the practical application should be conducted in the workplace by a suitably trained individual. This course is run over a maximum of 6 weeks. This course should be completed in conjunction with practical training specific to your CBCT unit and allows the DCP to act as an operator for the taking of Cone Beam images.
Suture Removal
This course is available to all dental nurses who would like to assist in dental treatments by the removal of sutures following assessment by a dental surgeon. The knowledge and theory are provided online, and the learner is asked to nominate an in-house supervisor for the practical stages. The course can be started at anytime and runs over a maximum of 16 weeks.
Dental Impression Taking
This course is aimed at all dental care professionals and provides training to allow the taking of dental impressions for all treatments. The knowledge and theory is provided online through two modules, and the learner is asked to nominate an in-house supervisor for the practical stages. The course can be started at anytime and runs over a maximum of 12 weeks.
Application of Rubber Dam
This course is available to dental nurses who wish to assist in dental treatment by placing rubber dam. The knowledge and theory is provided online, and the learner is asked to nominate an in-house supervisor for the practical stages. The course can be started at anytime and runs over a maximum of 6 weeks.
Clinical Photography
This course is aimed at dental nurses who wish to undertake clinical photography as part of treatment planning and assessment. The knoweldge and theory of this activity is provided online and assessment is by way of a small portfolio of common photographic views. The course can be started at anytime and runs for a maximum of 4 weeks.
Dental Decontamination
This course is suitable for anyone undertaking dental decontamination duties. Candidates do not need to be GDC registered to apply for this programme. The course is comprised of two modules and assessed by written assignments and a short Multiple Choice test. It can be started at any time and runs for a maximum of 4 weeks.
